What we found

159 Franklin Street’s cornice was past the point where patching was a serious option. The metal had thinned through in too many places. The decorative profile had been progressively lost to repeated bad repairs over decades. The bracket-to-wall connection had begun to fail in ways that meant the structural integrity was going to become a question soon.

This was not a “scrape and recoat” job. This was a remove-and-replace job. We were straightforward with the owner about that.

The Work

Document the existing cornice profile carefully — every dimension, every decorative element — before removing it. Fabricate the new cornice off-site to match. Remove the old cornice, repair the wall connection, and install the new unit with proper flashing and weather-tight detailing. Finish in two coats of color-matched topcoat.

The result

A new cornice that matches the architectural intent of the original — same profile, same proportions, same finish — but with sound metal, proper bracket connections, and a 50+ year service life ahead of it.
